JOB DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE: Utility Technician II
DEPARTMENT: Operation and Maintenance Division
REPORTS TO: Superintendent of Operation and Maintenance Division
FLSA: Hourly
GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF WORK:
This is routine, manual work- repetitive in nature. Performs duties primarily requiring physical exertion. Work involves the use of manual tools on routine tasks and use of power tools. The duties range over a large variety of activities, including light and physical labor, indoor and outdoor work, and work in groups or alone, depending on the nature of the assignment.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
A. Full time assistance with and/or minimal sole performance of sewer and
water pipefitting skills necessary in the operation and maintenance of a water and sewer utility.
B. Maintains reliable attendance record
C. Cleans, organizes and accounts for hand tools and misc. equipment
D. Able to locate existing facilities
E. Prepares project progress reports and all related paperwork
F. Evaluates progress of work for completeness, accuracy, and conformance
with standards and specifications
G. Maintains and repairs sewage grinder pump units
SUPERVISED BY: Foreman and/or Assistant Manager Operations
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The Physical demands of this position include but are not limited to the following:
A. Frequent reaching, walking, kneeling, bending, stooping, lifting, pulling
climbing in and around construction type equipment
B. entering and exiting confined spaces
ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS:
The environmental conditions the position incumbent is exposed to while performing job duties are limited but are not limited to the following:
A. Frequent outside environment, odors, noise, vibration, chemicals, extreme
dust and fumes
EQUIPMENT OPERATIONS:
This position must be able to operate the following types of equipment to fulfill job duties.
A. Motor Driven Vehicle
B. Hand operated power tools
C. Hand tools
D. Specialized equipment, including but not limited to sewer cleaners
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS:
High School Diploma or GED equivalent
The applicant must possess the ability to maintain a good working relationship with all co-workers and the general public. The applicant must maintain a valid WV Driver’s License.
The applicant must posses the following experience and skills:
A. Knowledge of safety measures and practices used in utility work and
enforces same on other members of crew. Recognizes unsafe conditions and resolves said conditions in a timely fashion
B. Ability to comply with instructions
C. Good Knowledge of standard compaction requirements and procedures
D. Ability to communicate effectively
E. Ability to be on call for weekly periods
F. Ability to train others in job skills
G. Understands all aspects of confined space safety
The above-described Education, Experience and Skill requirements shall be general guidelines that will apply in most circumstances. The General Manager shall have the discretion to waive some or all of these requirements. Such waiver shall only be made in the rare case of a worker who consistently demonstrates though exceptional performance a strong grasp of the necessary concepts and principles, which the requirements are intended to capture.
